Baby Leighton arrived into the world after a pretty long labour. As Shelley, his Mum, told me his birth story during his newborn photo shoot at my studio, I pictured the hours during those two days – each one must have felt like a year. But this is is the magic of childbirth – we are strong, we endure it for the sake of our babies, and the reward at the end is worth it a thousand-fold.
A look at him, with his head full of hair and his bright, intelligent eyes (even at just nine days old!), and I was smitten. I wanted to capture Leighton’s early-days freshness and beauty in a simple and honest way, just like Mum and Dad wanted. From the first moment, I knew that his first baby portraits would turn out just perfect – and they did.
Leighton loves being held, and who can blame him. The warmth of his parents’ arms are infinitely more inviting than even the softest of blankets in a warm photo studio. So I cuddled him. A lot! (Perks of the job, I know.) I made sure that he felt safe and comfortable every time he was set down, and always in a position that would feel natural to him.
And from there, I watched him. I loved observing him as his tiny fingers and toes curled and stretched. He yawned a lot, and liked holding onto his ears and lips for comfort. He was very alert for much of the photo session, and that was great, because it meant that I could capture him with his eyes wide open. He often turned towards window to gaze at the daylight coming through.
Here are a couple of the images from Leighton’s newborn photo session. As I work my way through the editing, I fall in love with the beautiful simplicity of the baby portraits we captured, and will be sure to share more very soon.
