This gorgeous newborn photo shoot in Balham, South London, was all about simplicity. This family’s vision for their 7-day old daughter’s newborn portraits was to keep posing to a minimum and let the love and truth of their family life do all the talking. The photo shoot took place at home, where everyone felt at ease. There were no bulky props, no big lights – just natural light, big beds, comfy chairs and a young family welcoming their newest addiction with joy and excitement.
I love it when I am able to photograph simple interactions as they happen. Toddlers don’t often enjoy lots of direction – it so much more relaxing for everyone to let them do their own thing and be themselves! Especially when you have *this* much cuteness in the room 🙂
It was fascinating to watch big sister Noémie getting to know Isabelle. The arrival of a new baby in the family is a big upheaval for young children and toddlers, and one can never anticipate how they might react to the new little person. In my many years as a professional newborn photographer, I have seen it all – from overexcitement, to non-chalance, to mad mad love – all pretty normal reactions!
In the case of Miss Noémie, there was a lot of curiosity and excitement directed towards little Isabelle. A heartwarming desire to share toys with her and a thoughtfulness for her comfort and safety. All very good signs that these girls’ friendship will grow strong in coming years.
Here is a little example of the beautiful sisterly moments I was fortunate enough to capture on the day of the shoot. As we placed Isabelle on the big bed for some natural light newborn portraits towards the beginning of the shoot, Noemie climbed up just beside her and, ever-so-gently, held her and kissed her. And of course, she took the chance to get a good close-up look at Isabelle’s perfect and tiny little, fingers, mouth and nose 🙂

Photographing babies in their homes, using nothing but natural light, produces a relaxed atmosphere that is ideal for natural newborn portraits. With all comforts and essential equipment nearby, new parents need not worry about long journeys across town, and can instead fully enjoy their baby’s first photography experience, safe in the knowledge that their memories are in my capable and experienced hands.
