One thing that still makes me excited about being a newborn baby photographer, even after nearly ten years in this business, is that I love to experiment at every session. I can confidently say that I remember every single baby I have photographed, because no two sessions ever feel the same. This means that, as far as posing is concerned, I have a very natural approach. Rather than working off a list of poses, I love to watch and learn all about a baby’s emerging personality through their spontaneous movement. Sleep is desirable but completely optional; little hands and feet have a mind of their own at this age, and that’s so beautiful to see and capture – rock out, little one 🙂
This young lady, Felicity, came to see me at my natural light studio in Basingstoke when she was 21 days old. She is Mum and Dad’s first baby but you would never know – they were both so wise and well-versed in the art of soothing, feeding and nappy changing, that you could have been forgiven for thinking they were already old hands!
So, Felicity. Look at those big blue eyes – just plain gorgeous. I absolutely loved the fact that we got plenty of awake moments where she was happy and contented, really just chilling out and observing us busy ourselves around her. So much eye contact! And of course we also managed to get her sleeping peacefully for half of the shoot – I loved the way she snoozed with abandon on the studio bed, wrapped up in beautiful bright light. Heavenly.
And right at the end, the sun came out and we were able to make the most of it outside – my favourite thing to do at a newborn photo shoot, whenever possible! I have the best possible excuse for not cutting the grass – the sweetest patch of little daisies that has taken over my back garden. And when you lay a tiny, beautiful, perfect baby on it…. well, it looks every bit as good as you imagine.
